TREE OF TÉNÉRÉ
TREE OF TÉNÉRE IS REPRESENTED BY PACE GALLERY. DEBUT PERFORMANCE AT BURNING MAN 2017
The Tree of Ténéré is a large-scale LED artwork conceived and created by Zachary Smith. With a celebratory spirit fitting for this unique event, Studio Drift accepted the invitation to contribute additional digital routes for display on the tree. To commemorate their 10-year anniversary, Studio Drift adapted their 2007 Flylight, which contains an algorithm that mimics a swarm of birds and reacts to its environment, creating an interactive light play controlled by the movements and brain activity of visitors.
The Tree of Ténéré is an interactive light sculpture with 175.000 led's, referring to the strongest natural symbol of life flourishing in the most difficult circumstances.
In the southern Sahara desert, in a region called Ténéré, a solitary tree stood alone. It was the most isolated tree on Earth. The Tree of Ténéré became an important ceremonial gathering place for traders and travelers as they crossed the desert. It brought people together for community, ritual and rest. Unfortunately almost 50 years ago it was mysteriously destroyed by a lone truck driver. The Tree of Ténéré aims to create a sculptural space where cultures and travellers can meet without prejudice and expectation. With reviving this symbol of endurance the team has created one of the most memorable art pieces at Burningman.
The programming of the tree is location and season dependent. The tree has multiple sensorial input creating interactivity by measuring brain frequency's, hart rate and movement.
The Tree of Ténéré is a partnership between Zachary Smith, Alexander Green, Mark C. Slee and Studio Drift.
